Landscapes

Landscape painting is for me is such an opportunity to convey an emotional response. My process is about feeling and the intention in my art is about conveying the emotion of place. The underlying skill and technique is secondary to the use of colour and My landscapes seek to be lyrical as there is an underlying musical theme as I relate tonal values to musical compositions with rhythmic brushstrokes.  So to view my art is like ‘experiential learning’ about location. The subconscious mind is the storehouse of all our experiences and my art aims to evoke emotional responses in the viewer immersing them in the painting so they view the painting through their own personal interpretation.

Abstract landscapes

Landscape inspired by travel

A decade of being an artistic residence on various painting trips in Southern Spain and Turkey influence the immediacy and emotional response to the landscape in my art. My process is intuitive as I envisage a scene which begins as a series of fault lines and gestural brushstrokes and ‘fleshing out’ the painting as if working from the inside out. Many of my paintings begin on location, based on sketches carried out during various painting trips and the full sensory experience reflects in the final result. At times I describe urban views as landscape in a myriad of loose brushwork and colours.

Semi abstract landscapes

Paintings inspired by walks in Gloucestershire my UK base. I also take groups out walking and painting with small holiday providers and my work is often influenced by other UK landscapes such as the Yorkshire Dales and Cornwall.
