Landscapes
For me, landscape painting is an opportunity to convey an emotional response rather than a literal representation. My process is rooted in feeling, with colour as the central means of expression. Technique and skill serve the work, but they remain secondary to the emotional resonance I aim to create.
My landscapes are lyrical in nature, often infused with an underlying musicality. Tonal values become notes, rhythmic brushstrokes create harmony, and the composition unfolds like a score. The subconscious mind—our storehouse of memory and experience—informs this process, guiding both creation and interpretation.
Ultimately, my intention is to evoke an emotional connection, drawing the viewer into the painting so that they engage with it through their own personal lens.
Abstract landscapes
Landscape inspired by travel
With over a decade as an artist and art tutor, leading painting trips across Southern Spain, Greece, Turkey, the US, and the UK, my work has evolved from an emotional response to place. My process is intuitive: a scene often begins as a network of fault lines and gestural brushstrokes, gradually “fleshed out” as if working from the inside out.
Many paintings begin on location, rooted in quick sketches and the full sensory experience of being present in the landscape. These impressions carry through into the studio, where memory and emotion shape the final result.
At times, I extend this approach to urban views and also incorporating the figurative into my landscapes—expressed in a myriad of loose brushwork and colour to capture not only what is seen, but what is felt.
Country scenes
Paintings inspired by walks in Gloucestershire my UK base. I also take groups out walking and painting with small holiday providers and my work is often influenced by other UK landscapes such as the Yorkshire Dales and Cornwall.
Watercolours
Paintings inspired by my trips to Spain, Turkey and Greece. Some of the art is the basis of a demonstration for an art trip.
